What is enrollment attribution?

Attribution traces each enrolled student back to the campaigns, events and channels behind their inquiry, so a university can credit its recruitment work.

Attribution: definition and example

At a university, attribution is the bookkeeping that connects recruitment activity to the students who actually arrive. A prospective MBA student might click a search ad, join a virtual information session, talk with an alumni ambassador and finally submit the request-for-information form on the program page. Attribution decides which of those touches earns credit for the enrolled student.

Two simple models answer different questions. First-touch credits whatever introduced the student to the institution, which helps when judging awareness spending such as a new college fair circuit. Last-touch credits the step just before the inquiry or application, which shows the enrollment marketing office what prompted action. Comparing both for the same entering class can reveal a channel that starts many journeys yet rarely gets the final click.

Consider a hypothetical regional university reviewing its fall entering class. Its paid social campaign appears often as a first touch and rarely as a last touch, while its weekend open house seldom introduces anyone yet often comes right before the application. Neither channel is wasted: one starts journeys and the other closes them. Cutting the social budget because last-touch reports look weak could quietly shrink next year's open house attendance.

Decentralized recruiting makes the job harder. When the law school, the engineering school and the international office each run their own campaigns, the same source can appear under three different names. Agree on shared source names and UTM conventions before the admissions cycle opens, and give offline activity such as high school visits, education fairs and counselor breakfasts its own campaign tags, so a name collected on paper at a fair carries its source into the system the way a web form does.

Should attribution stop at the application? Enrollment leadership usually wants credit assigned to students who deposit and register for classes. A source that fills the pool with incomplete files can look strong at the top of the funnel and weak by census date, so carry the original source on the record through admission, deposit and enrollment.

How higheredcrm.ai helps

higheredcrm.ai forms store UTM source, medium, campaign, term and content plus the landing page on each lead, and imports can set source, medium and campaign per row for fair and visit lists. Campaign analytics report leads touched and converted with first-touch and last-touch counts, and the organization dashboard shows channel and source performance.
